Dropdown lists are a popular and useful feature in form creation, allowing users to select predefined options from a list rather than having to type out their response manually. In Avvoka, there are two ways to create dropdown lists, depending on the needs of the user. More information about lists can be found here.

  1. Select: This type of dropdown list allows users to choose from a list of options that have been pre-defined. When using the "Select" answer type, the user will see a dropdown menu with a list of options, and they can select the one that best fits their response. The "Select" answer type is particularly useful when the list of options is relatively short, and the form creator wants to ensure that the user selects an option from the list. For example, for a question asking for the user's title (e.g., Mr, Mrs, Ms), the form creator might use the "Select" answer type to ensure that the user chooses one of the listed options from within the dropdown list.

To create a dropdown list using “Select”, head to the relevant question in the questionnaire and open the dropdown answer type menu to choose “Select”. Then, type the values under ‘Select options’ in the question. Note: Always separate values in a list with a semi-colon (;) or the system will recognize them as a single value.

You can check the dropdown list in either Live demo or in document preview mode.

  1. Open select: This is another answer type that can be used to create a dropdown list. "Open select" provides an added layer of functionality. While similar to the "Select" option, the "Open select" feature allows users to add their own option by typing it in if they don't find the listed values in the dropdown applicable to their needs. This added functionality can be particularly useful in situations where you want to provide a list of options but also allow for other responses that may not be included in the pre-defined list. For instance, if you're creating a form that asks for the user's industry, you could use the "Open select" answer type to provide a dropdown list of common industries, while also allowing users to type in their own industry if it isn't included in the list.

The "Open select" answer type is a versatile and flexible way to create dropdown lists in Avvoka. By enabling users to add their own options, it can help ensure that their forms are inclusive of a wide range of responses while still providing a convenient dropdown list interface.

To create a dropdown list using “Open select”, head to the relevant question in the questionnaire and open the dropdown answer type menu to choose “Open select”. Then, type the values under ‘Select options’ in the question. Note: Always separate values in a list with a semi-colon (;) or the system will recognize them as a single value.

Then, open the dropdown list in either the Live demo or document preview mode, and type in a value instead of choosing one from the list. For instance, in the example below, the dropdown list did not contain the option: Marketing so it was typed in. You can also see the generated value on the right hand side of the screen in the document side within the Live demo page when it was inputted. Remember to press ‘Enter’ after typing in a value in “Open select” or it will not be saved.

In either the “Select” or the “Open select” answer types, you can choose which users can see the related attribute. For instance, you may decide to hide the attribute from your counterparty and only enable it for your party.
